There are eight annual Thames Sailing Barge races, known within the fraternity as ‘matches’. These take place every year usually between May and September. On a clear day with a fresh breeze and a good turn out of barges, these races can be extremely competitive and exciting.

Xylonite competes in the Bowsprit class and has a great track record of success. Her principle rivals in 2014 will be: Mirosa, Edme, Adieu, Marjorie and Decima.

Competing in these matches is something that Xylonite’s owner, skipper and crew take quite seriously, and as with any competitive sport there can be an element of danger. Therefore racing charters are ideally suited to persons with some sailing experience, although it is not generally expected that members of the charter party help crew the barge.

In the evening after the match there is a prize giving ceremony and dinner ashore to which charterers are welcome. These events are normally very sociable and good fun and make a perfect end to a memorable day.

Charter for race days is suitable for groups of up to eight people. Catering for this type of charter is all included. There will be a licensed bar on board.
